Rome [ENA] Today Italy and France signed the so-called Quirinale Treaty at Villa Madama, in Rome, with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella as host. The treaty has been signed by Emmanuel Macron and Mario Draghi, who personally followed the drafting of the agreement, which apparently has not even been known to the Italian Foreign Ministry. This confidentiality certainly did not satisfy the political parties,

in particular the Lega and Fratelli d'Italia who did not look favorably on the intense activity of France in Italy. Of course, it will then be up to the respective national parliaments to ratify the agreement. According to the President of the Council of Ministers Mario Draghi the Treaty arises from the awareness of the depth of the ties between Italy and France. The Treaty strengthens the cooperation between the two states creating institutional tools to make it more structural.

The Treaty intervenes in crucial sectors for the two countries: from security to justice, from research to industry. To mention just a few initiatives launched today, an Italian-French civil service and a shared operational unit in support of the police was set up. To promote relations between border regions, the parties envisage a cross-border cooperation committee. In the field of migration, Italy and France recognize the need for a shared flow management and asylum policy at European level, based on the principles of responsibility and solidarity.

The parties are committed to protecting the agricultural systems and recognizing their uniqueness. The Treaty launched new forms of cooperation in the energy and technological fields, in research and innovation. A mechanism whereby, at least once every quarter, an Italian minister will attend a council of ministers of the French government, and vice versa was created.
